World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the important role that science has in society and is celebrated each year on November 10. It also highlights the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues.
Uttarakhand celebrated its 18th Foundation Day on November 9, 2018. On the day, the region had become a state of the Union, after separation from Uttar Pradesh. In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he hoped that the state, which is a confluence of nature, progress and rich culture, will continue to set new records on the path of development.
Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved leasing out six airports of Airports Authority of India (AAI) for operation, management and development under Public Private Partnership (PPP) in the first phase. This will be done through Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC).
The state cabinet of Bihar has approved a proposal to pay Rs 25000 to every girl graduating in 2018 and onwards. The one-time payment will be made to every girl who graduated from the colleges of the state on or after April 25, 2018.
Electric carmaker Tesla has appointed Robyn Denholm as the Chairman of the company’s board of directors, replacing Elon Musk. She will also be leaving her role as CFO and Head of Strategy at Telstra, Australia’s largest telecommunications company. She has been on the Tesla board as an independent director since 2014. Elon Musk will remain the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla.
Samay Godika won the fourth annual “Breakthrough Junior Challenge” for 2018, a global science video competition. Samay Godika is 16 years old. He is a native of Boston. He now lives in India and studies at the National Public School-Koramangala in Bengaluru. He submitted a video in the life sciences category on circadian rhythms for the US-based Breakthrough Junior Challenge.
The Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities, 2018 was inaugurated on November 9, 2018 in New Delhi by the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Krishan Pal Gurjar.
Indian Army inducted new artillery guns and equipment, including K9 Vajra and M777 howitzers, at Deolali artillery centre in Nashik, Maharashtra. The induction ceremony took place in the presence of Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Army chief General Bipin Rawat.
India and Singapore have conducted the 25th edition of SIMBEX in Andaman Sea India and Singapore have started the 25th edition of SIMBEX (Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise) off Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal. According to the Defence Ministry, SIMBEX 2018 will be the “largest since 1994 in terms of scale and complexity”. The initial harbour phase will be held at Port Blair followed by Sea Phase in the Andaman Sea.
